SACRAMENTO — Sacramento's emergency medical system is overwhelmed with patients.
Captain Justin Sylvia with the Sacramento Fire Department said its 18 current ambulances are often busy transporting a patient or at the hospital.
"It happens on a daily basis, to be honest with you. We're in drawdown where we just have a few ambulances left in the entire county," he said.
EMS officials say too many people are calling 911 when it's not a serious medical emergency.
Medic Ambulance: Family and Community for 45 Years

FAIRFIELD — 1998 was a very stressful time for the Pierson family and Medic Ambulance.
Its very existence was on the line when it found itself facing one of the largest ambulance service providers in the country – American Medical Response, or AMR – for exclusive service rights for Solano County.
Up until then, ambulances were dispatched similarly to tow trucks, through a rotation system.
"It was very contentious," Jimmy Pierson, president and chief operating officer of Medic Ambulance, said about the fight. "If we lose that RFP (request for proposal), game is over; we would have gone out of business."

There were no puddles or mirrors outside 506 Couch St., but when Jimmy Pierson looked at 12-year-old Kyle McBride washing the tires of ambulance vehicles on Friday afternoon he saw a reflection of his younger self.
Pierson was 12 in 1996. But even at that young age, he wanted to be part of the family business with Medic Ambulance. You could often find Pierson in the back of the business working on the ambulances, whether it be the first 1972 Cadillac model or one of the more recent 1994 vans.
“I’ve loved this industry ever since I can remember,” Pierson said. “I’m not sitting inside an office all day and punching out at 6 p.m. and heading home. I love EMS and I love being out and about in the community. I’ve lived by this, breathed by the fact that Medic Ambulance is a community ambulance service that is out and about in the community.”

Central Sonoma County gets new ambulance service Tuesday. Here’s what it means for residents.

Starting Tuesday, calling 911 for ambulance service will bring a new player to the paved and not-so-paved streets of central Sonoma County.
That’s when Sonoma County Fire District takes over the county’s lucrative, exclusive, 5-year ambulance contract, previously held for three decades by American Medical Response, locally known as Sonoma Life Support.
AMR’s familiar white and blue-trim ambulance vans will be replaced by a new fleet of boxy red and white-trim transports operated by the fire district’s subcontractor, Medic Ambulance.
County health officials and fire district representatives said local residents should expect ambulance service that is as good or better than what’s been provided for the past 30 years.

As my term as your President comes to an end, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the journey we have taken together over these past two years and to express my deepest gratitude for your unwavering support, enthusiasm, and commitment. When I first took on this role, I was inspired by the common goal we shared: to enhance the delivery of our emergency services and to support each other as we strive for excellence in our duties. I am proud to say that as an association, we have made significant strides towards achieving that goal. However, this success would not have been possible without your valuable contributions and the bond that we’ve built together. Your dedication to our noble cause, your willingness to invest time and resources, and your ability to work constructively have been the pillars of our growth. Every initiative that we’ve pursued, every achievement we’ve celebrated, was made possible because of your involvement.

A news release by Dodd’s office credited Pierson’s company for being on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic, from transporting passengers on the Diamond Princess cruise ship to Travis Air Force Base for quarantining in early 2020 to partnering with Solano Public Health for mobile testing and vaccinations.
“Helen stepped up in a major way, helping to keep our community safe during one of the worst public health crises the world has ever seen,” Dodd said in a statement. “She leads a dedicated team that Solano County and the surrounding region has come to depend on.
